Ajax scored twice in each half to beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-0

AMSTERDAM (AP) Ajax scored twice in each half to beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 on Wednesday and stay second behind runaway leader Real Madrid in Group D of the Champions League.

Gregory van der Wiel drilled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from a difficult angle in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead after a clever backheel from Christian Eriksen.
Miralem Sulejmani, back in the Ajax lineup after a brief injury layoff, doubled the lead five minutes later after finishing off a move started by Siem de Jong.
De Jong made it 3-0 in the 65th with a 10-meter shot before substitute Nicolas Lodeiro scored the fourth in injury time.
“I really liked the way we played tonight,” Van der Wiel said. “It’s always nice if you can score a goal.”
Ajax is second with seven points, three ahead of Lyon. The Dutch side is assured of earning at least a Europa League berth. Real Madrid leads Group D with 12 points after winning all four of its games. Dinamo could have pulled one back a minute into the second half when Luis Ibanez fired a long-range drive, which Kenneth Vermeer saved but spilled back into play before captain Jan Vertongen make a clearance.
De Jong had a chance to put the scoreline beyond Dinamo’s reach after perfectly controlling Toby Alderweireld’s pass in the area but goalkeeper Ivan Kelava made a point-blank save.

“The scoreline is a nice present but I think what’s important is we played as a team,” said Ajax coach Frank de Boer.
Earlier on, some miscommunication between Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen almost led to a Dinamo goal in the 16th but the Ajax captain recovered to clear the ball away from danger.

After missing a couple of chances in the opening minutes, Ajax had Van De Wiel to thank after his ferocious shot gave Kelava no chance.
The second goal was just as eye-catching. Eyong Enoh powered past the Dinamo midfield before the Cameroon midfielder picked out De Jong, who laid the ball into Sulejmani’s path. The Serbian striker dribbled past a badly-positioned Kelava before prodding the ball into an open net.
Van der Wiel started the move that led to Ajax’s third. From the right flank, the Netherlands international teased past two Dinamo defenders before flighting a cross toward goal. Eriksen intervened with another flick leaving De Jong with a simple task of beating Kelava from close range.
Substitutes Lodeiro and Lorenzo Ebecilio combined to score the fourth, wrapping up a win that gives Ajax hope of finishing second in the group.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 24th minute by curling home a free kick.
The Portugal winger then notched his 100th goal for the Spanish club by converting a penalty in the 69th after Lyon fullback Mouhamadou Dabo had fouled him.
Madrid tops Group D with 12 points, five clear of Ajax, which routed Dinamo Zagreb 4-0. Lyon remains third with four points.
“We knew a win here would secure qualification,” Ronaldo said. “We played well but it was a difficult game against a tough team. We are happy that we’re through.”
Madrid is the only team in the group stage that has won all its matches and has yet to concede a goal. It outplayed Lyon by stifling the hosts in midfield with its pressing.
Madrid striker Karim Benzema collected a through ball from Mesut Oezil to be clean through but was denied by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 10th.
The Spanish side threatened again in the 23rd. Oezil found Benzema with a backheel flick but Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff stopped the play by shoving Benzema on the edge of the box.

Ronaldo exploited a crack in the Lyon wall from the ensuing free kick to place the ball out of the goalkeeper’s reach.
Madrid came close to adding a second goal before halftime. Lassana Diarra played Oezil in but Lloris came off his line to knock the ball away in the 29th.
The France goalkeeper saved his team again in the 32nd by parrying a shot from Benzema from Ronaldo’s pass.
Madrid winger Angel Di Maria led a counterattack in the 44th and fed Oezil but the Germany playmaker’s tame effort was no trouble for Lloris.
Lyon nearly equalized twice against the run of play. Winger Jimmy Briand chested down a high cross from Dabo to shoot straight at goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the 35th.
On the stroke of halftime, Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis won the ball in midfield to release Gourcuff down the right wing, but Casillas tipped Gourcuff’s powerful strike over the bar.

Ronaldo threatened a couple of times in the second half before firing the spot kick into the middle of the net to make it 2-0.
“We faced a team that was stronger than us,” Lloris said. “I think it’s probably the best team in Europe right now.”
Lloris prevented Madrid from adding a third goal by stopping a low curling shot from Di Maria in the 73rd.
Lyon almost scored a consolation goal in the 78th but Briand’s header from a corner by Gourcuff crashed against the bar. The Lyon winger beat the offside trap to have another chance in the 89th but his chip sailed wide.

Germany have become the first team to qualify for next year’s European Football Championships after thrashing Austria 6-2 in Gelsenkirchen.
Mesut Ozil bagged a brace as the three-time European champions continued their 100% percent record in the campaign.
Miroslav Klose opened the scoring in the eighth minute, with Ozil doubling the advantage after 23 minutes. Lukas Podolski made it 3-0 five minutes later before Marko Arnautovic pulled one back for the visitors.
Ozil all but sealed victory two minutes after the restart with Andre Schurrle and Mario Gotze adding late goals to cap another impressive German display.

“We got caught out twice defensively, but I think we restricted the Austrians to just two chances and I prefer that we created so many chances,” German coach Joachim Low said after the game, AFP reported.

Wesley Sneijder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar both scored twice as the Dutch consolidated their lead at the top of Group E. San Marino have now conceded 44 goals in eight matches without managing a single goal themselves.
Hungary are now level on points with Sweden after beating them 2-1 in Budapest. Both teams now have 15 points although Hungary have played a game more.
In the other Group E match, Finland beat Moldova 4-1 in Helsinki.

Two goals from Wayne Rooney and a first international goal for Gary Cahill helped England to a 3-0 win over Bulgaria in Sofia in Group G.
Wales’ 2-1 victory over second-placed Montenegro in Cardiff also helped Fabio Capello’s men open up a three point gap at the top of the table.
Russia are top of Group B after they beat Macedonia 1-0 — Igor Semshov’s goal in the 41st minute separating the teams.
The Republic of Ireland drew 0-0 with Slovakia in Dublin as both teams missed out on going top of the table.
Armenia kept their slim hopes of qualification alive with a 3-0 win over Andorra.

Lyon had already proved their Champions League pedigree this season by knocking out tough Russians Rubin Kazan while Ajax, as Eredivisie champions, qualified directly. And they made their intentions clear in the early stages of a group which also includes Real Madrid, naming Bafetimbi Gomis as the only out-and-out striker on their team-sheet. Janssen’s attempt to crack the resolute Lyon defence started as early as the eighth fifth minute when his corner found Derk Boerrigter who missed with a header from six yards.

Boerrigter missed from another Janssen corner in the 12th minute before Lyon had their first chance, Bakary Kone flashing wide with an acrobatic overhead kick from a Kim Kallstrom free-kick. Janssen’s set-pieces continued to cause the French side problems with keeper Hugo Lloris punching clear another corner before Gomis fired over for Lyon at the other end. Ajax had a lucky escape on the half hour when Michel Bastos found space in the box and let fly with a volley which sailed over the bar when it ought to have found the target. And relieved at Lyon’s failure to snatch the lead, Ajax pressed towards the break, Miralem Sulejmani somehow missing with an easy header and Jan Vertonghen nodding wide from yet another Janssen corner.

Purpose
Lyon set about the second half with renewed purpose, Bastos forcing a rare save out of Kenneth Vermeer and Kallstrom firing wide before Vermeer was in action again to punch clear a Clement Grenier corner. Boerrigter was off target again after 65 minutes for Ajax and that was the last real chance for the home side, with both sides seemingly happy to settle for a point on opening night.

Lyon still had time to almost steal it at the death, Jimmy Briand taking advantage of a mistake by Gregory Van der Wiel to race through on goal, only for the defender to track back and make a superb saving tackle. In injury time, late Lyon substitute Gueida Fofana had a chance to make a name for himself with his first touch but he shot well wide of target and moments later the referee blew for full-time.

The visitors ended the night certainly the happier of the sides as they seek to continue a run which has taken them past the group stages every year since 2003.
Ajax boss Frank de Boer has targeted second place in Champions League Group D as he believes top spot will be secured by Real Madrid.
The Amsterdammers open their campaign on Wednesday night against Lyon with De Boer already dismissing the possibility of his side winning the pool.
And with Lyon expected to be Ajax’s closest challengers – Dinamo Zagreb are the rank outsiders – it is a crucial game for both sides.

Komende week ligt het clubvoetbal eventjes stil. Na een drukke week met nationaal en Europees voetbal staat er komende week veel interlandvoetbal op het programma. Met name de wedstrijden in de play-offs voor plaatsing voor het EK springen in het oog. Daarnaast is zijn er oefenwedstrijden. Unibet is erbij, met live streams en live quoteringen. Live beelden en odds zijn er van de play-offs voor het EK in Polen en O. Op vrijdag zijn de heenwedstrijden. Bosnië krijgt, net als twee jaar terug bij de play-offs voor het WK, bezoek van Portugal. Destijds wonnen de Portugezen met veel geluk. Dit jaar loert het ijzersterke Bosnie op revanche, onder aanvoering van goalgetter Dzeko.

Turkije neemt het thuis op tegen Kroatie. Voor Guus Hiddink is dit de laatste kans zijn hachje te redden in Turkije. Montenegro reist af naar Tsjechie, terwijl Ierland op bezoek gaat bij Estland. Twee jaar terug, in de play-offs, grepen de Ieren door vals spel van Frankrijk (handsbal Thierry Henry) naast een ticket voor het WK. Deze keer ontmoet de ploeg van Giovanni Trappatoni een minder sterke opponent. Er zijn ook beelden van oefeninterlands. Zo staan o.a. Lyon Ajax UEFA Champions League

Het aftellen richting Lyon Ajax is begonnen. Woensdagavond staat de eerste groepswedstrijd in de UEFA Champions League op het programma. Ajax trainde maandagochtend al met de speciale CL-ballen van adidas. Kolbeinn Sigthórsson verliet uit voorzorg voortijdig de training, zodat hij woensdag optimaal aan de aftrap kan verschijnen.

De Boer begroette maandagochtend 16 spelers op het trainingsveld. Ook Derk Boerrigter, die afgelopen zaterdag tegen Heracles wegens kramp gewisseld werd, trainde met de groep mee. Opgeteld bij de revaliderende Mats Rits en de keepers Vermeer, Cillessen en Verhoeven stonden er in totaal 20 Ajacieden op het veld van de Toekomst. Een half uur voor het einde van de training was dat aantal met een speler afgenomen toen Kolbeinn Sigthórsson de oefensessie voortijdig verliet. De IJslander ging uit voorzorg naar de kant, zodat hij woensdag tegen Lyon optimaal aan de aftrap kan verschijnen.

Onder toeziend oog van een aantal internationale gasten van AEGON Group trainde Ajax kort en bij vlagen fel. Het bezoek van Ajax’ hoofdsponsor AEGON zag onder meer dat Theo Janssen aardig trefzeker was bij de afwerkoefeningen op doel. Ook Miralem Sulejmani en Christian Eriksen verwenden de toeschouwers met een paar rake schoten op doel. Hopelijk is het een voorbode voor woensdag als de eerste wedstrijd in groep D op het programma staat.

Malta, 3 november 2011 – Het wordt eentonig, maar Lionel Messi wordt voor de derde keer op rij gekroond tot FIFA-wereldvoetballer van het jaar. Dat blijkt uit de noteringen van bookmaker Unibet. De Barcelona-speler staat 1,15 genoteerd. Gevolgd door Real-rivaal Christiano Ronaldo (5,00) en ploeggenoot Xavi (10,00). Ook Wesley Sneijder komt, als enige Nederlander, voor in het lijstje met 23 kanshebbers. Maar met een notering van ‘slechts’ 100,00 is hij kansloos. Voor hem zit er op 9 januari 2012 eerder een dagje shoppen met Yolanthe in Milaan in, dan het ophalen van de Gouden Bal in Zürich.

De verkiezing wereldvoetballer van het jaar is een samensmelting van de FIFA World Player of the Year Award en de Ballon d’Or Award van het Franse tijdschrift France Football. Beide Awards werden de afgelopen jaren steeds door dezelfde spelers gewonnen, vandaar de samenvoeging. Met Lionel Messi als topfavoriet zit er ook dit jaar geen verrassing in. Oranje-kandidaten Van Persie, Robben en Van der Vaart sneuvelden al eerder en ook voor Sneijder lijken de kansen nihil op de titel wereldvoetballer van het jaar. Opvallend is verder dat er maar liefst acht spelers van Barcelona voorkomen op de lijst. Ook voormalig Ajax-spits Luis Suárez behoort tot de kandidaten (75,00).

Guardiola coach van het jaar 2011
Barcelona-trainer Guardiola wordt door Unibet getipt als FIFA Wereldcoach van het jaar 2011 (1,50). De vooral aan het begin van dit seizoen geplaagde Arsenal-coach Arséne Wenger komt niet verder dan een notering van 100,00.

Londen is de voetbalhoofdstad van Engeland. Hoewel Manchester United al jaren de prijzen opeist en buurman City die hegemonie wil doorbreken, is Londen het thuis van vele gerenommeerde clubs: West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers. Twee van de grootste Londense clubs staan zaterdag tegenover elkaar, als Chelsea en Arsenal het tegen elkaar opnemen op Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is de club van het geld. Met de miljoenen van Abramovic heeft Chelsea een plaatsje tussen de grootmachten gekocht, maar sinds het vertrek van Mourinho is de club weinig succesvol. Met de komst van zijn alter ego Andre Villas-Boas doen de Blues een nieuwe gooi naar zilverwerk. De ploeg is gebouwd op de bekende namen (Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Cech) maar kent ook met Torres, Luiz, Ramirez en Kalou veel kwaliteit. In het eigen stadion is men erg sterk. Slechts van Fulham werd niet gewonnen. De ploeg staat knap derde, achter de twee rivalen uit Manchester.

Arsenal was altijd de club die leuk meedeed maar in het voorjaar afhaakte voor elke prijs. Dit jaar is daar verandering in gekomen: met het vertrek van Nasri en Fabregas was Arsenal vanaf het begin al kansloos voor het zilverwerk. Dit bleek uit ook de desastreuze competitiestart, met o.a. een 8-2 nederlaag bij Manchester United. Inmiddels is de ploeg opgeklommen tot bovenin de middenmoot, maar dat Arsenal dit seizoen geen rol van betekenis gaat spelen staat vast. Chelsea gaat daarom winnen van Arsenal, verwachten we. De ploeg heeft meer kwaliteit dan de bonte verzameling jongelingen en subtoppers van Arsenal, speelt thuis, en zit de koplopers uit Manchester op de hielen. Daarom tippen wij een overwinning voor Chelsea. Hiervoor krijg je bij Unibet een odd van 1.60!
